on a journey through the heart and mind
of world-renowned visual narrative artist
and quilter Marla Arna Jackson. Gracing
the pages are 34 color prints of her
narrative quilts — inspired by the oral
histories of Jackson’s ancestors and the
Kansas region, and created from batik- and
shibori-dyed cotton, wool, denim, shells,
beads, sequins, feathers, acrylic paint,
and the fabric of her life.

“To be really honest I was kicked out of two different
sewing classes at two different high schools.
In 1968, I was sent out of tailoring class at Cooley
High School in Detroit, Michigan. I was kicked
out of sewing class at Oak Park High School
in Oak Park, Michigan…”
